What Is The Hinternet?

A Sixth-Anniversary Progress Report

The precise age of The Hinternet remains a matter of significant contention. One school of thought dates its origins to 1915, while another claims to have documentary evidence of its beginnings during the lifetime of the Renaissance German occultist Heinrich Cornelius Agrippa (1486-1535), and another still associates it with the early Moravian Missionary to Greenland, Johann Laurentius Köhler (c. 1709-1754). We can reevaluate these competing theories on another occasion. Today I have a more modest goal: to give an overview, especially for the many new subscribers we have gained this month, of The Hinternet’s principal distinctions since arriving on Substack in late August, 2020, as well as to tell you something of its spirit and of its growth, six years on, into a proper cornerstone of our culture.

Also, before we get into it in earnest, let me say that I’m very excited to be involved in the course being offered by the Hinternet Foundation this fall, beginning October 1, on “The Voynich Manuscript, Riverbank Laboratories, and the Deep Philosophical Origins of the American Military-Information-Technology Complex”. I believe the model we’re working out for our courses, in which participation includes co-authorship on a work of hybrid creative scholarship published under the Hinternet Foundation imprint, is going to be both greatly satisfying for all involved and an exciting new approach, fit for our era, to collaborative para-academic work. The deadline to apply is September 15. Get on it!
